Loving Rainy Days is such an interesting title for this book and I was very intrigued at learning that Rainy Days is the name of the main character in the book. I believe that I found out about this book via The ARC book club group where someone had posted about free downloads of African American books. I have never met the author, Angel Bearfield, who ironically hails from Newark, NJ.
Rainy Days starts off getting right to the heart of the matter with a young 12 year old Rainy on the witness stand reliving the horrors of sexual abuse that she endured at the hands of her piece of crap stepfather Jason. One cannot help but be drawn into the story and instantly feel for this young girl. Angel does a great job of engaging the reader with the opening chapter. You will find yourself talking, yelling at the book as if you are watching television or talking to someone right in front of you.
As Rainy awakes from her dream, we are instantly fast forwarded to the life of an adult Rainy who has gracefully overcome a horrific childhood experience to an almost fairy tale existence. The message that your past does not have to dictate your future certainly rings true as we read how Rainy has been adopted into a family who love, care and protect her into a beautiful and productive person.
As the story progresses, there are some very serious and unforgivable errors with Angel's writing as well as some issues with the story line that could definitely use a reputable editors touch. Overall, the story itself is good, but Rainy has an unexpected meeting with what will turn out to be her knight in shining armor that is so far fetched and unbelievable, that not even your movie imagination could allow this type of meeting to occur. Other problems that I have with Angel Bearfield's novel are that there are SO MANY grammatical, spelling, and contextual issues, that had the story itself not been good, I would not have been able to finish the book. This was the author's first novel and she certainly has great potential. My suggestion would be to spend the extra money for an editor who can help you to avoid the very basic errors which are evident throughout the book.
Once you move past how Rainy meets the handsome Miki Tase, if you are able to continue to read, which I do suggest, then you will be enticed by the character descriptions and romantic trysts that take place throughout. Angel certainly does a fine job with her sensual dialogue which will definitely make your jaw drop at some points and have you fanning yourself in others. It does make you wonder though, with Rainy's past history of sexual abuse why Angel chose to create her character as being so sexually confident without any hesitations at all. Read for yourself and you decide.
The very beautiful and successful Tase family, as described by Angel, which includes some very handsome brothers will make you want to google them to see if they really exist. How Rainy comes to meet the entire Tase family will probably make you want to throw the book down because it is so far fetched, but worth continuing for the sake of amusement. Meeting this family will turn out to be Rainy's saving grace as the battles that unfold in her life will definitely have you screaming get em'.
Rainy Days is a book worth the time to read if you don't mind lots of mistakes. My suggestion to Angel would be to make the necessary corrections and issue a 2nd edition because the story is one that I could envision on the big screen some day.
